People often ask us, "when pruchasing a new air conditioning equipment, what SEER value can you recommend?" They may be sort of shocked to listen for our answer…we usually recommend at most a 14 SEER ac, and in a few, relatively rare occasions (think desert areas), we recommend 16 SEER. "But Tim! Our contractor asserted that if we got the 21 SEER air conditioning for $3,000 more, it will purchase itself within quite a while!" If that is true, then I in addition have a bridge to promote you…to start, you've made two mistakes: one, you listened to a contractor; don't do that (I find out what you're thinking…my spouse just said the same principle: "but can't you be a contractor?"). Two, do not be so gullible!

SEER symbolizes Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, which is a target ways of evaluating the efficiency of an aura conditioner. In other words, the better the SEER value, the harder efficient a unit is…when it's new, inside a laboratory. Think of SEER being a lot like Miles-Per-Gallon (MPG) for ones car. But let's just think for just a second…if you purchase your car that gets 30 MPG, does that mean that you will get 30 MPG because you race top to bottom the 405 freeway at 90 miles-per-hour, playing slalom using the commuters? Obviously not.

The Issue with Buying High-SEER Air Conditioners
Unlike MPG, SEER could be a little bit misleading when pruchasing a whole new air conditioner. That's considering that the SEER values shown to you might be calculated within a lab setting, by using a very specific range of parameters (the depths which lay beyond your scope as soon as i've; accomplish this if you need to nerd-out: טכנאי מזגנים בחולון AHRI – Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute – SEER Calculation). The thing is, nobody in real life lives like that. Do you prefer your AC set to 72 degrees, or טכנאי מזגנים בחולון 68? Do your home is in Montana, or even in Palmdale, California? There are actually way too many variables to create a statement as rash as: "you'll buy the device over its 10-15 year lifetime." This brings me to my next point – reliability.

When we make our suggestions for buying a new ac, reliability is an important factor for people like us at ASM. We can't recommend a unit with reliability issues, and thus far, I were not everything that impressed while using high-efficiency air conditioners that We have to date (high efficiency means above 16 SEER). They typically use two-stage compressors, and I honestly do not think the technology is reasonably there yet. We obtain loads of repair calls on these, and oh, by-the-way, the various components for options are about a couple of times the buying price of those for the lower SEER models. So, while you step not in the laboratory and into reality, start factoring in maintenance and repair costs, we've found the bigger SEER units to become more costly, an average of, for the consumer.

"But Tim, then how come my contractor keep telling me I would upgrade towards the high-SEER unit and cut costs?" Ah, the actual answer; we have that too. The response is that they be more expensive, as you're asked, they will mark them up higher, and in turn, תיקון מזגנים בחולון make more profit. The fact is, when buying an air conditioning, some brands could possibly be double the amount of for that high-SEER version as for the standard AC units. This is the same reason why McDonald's asks you if you wish to "Super-Size" your meal, טכנאי מזגנים בחולון and car salesmen try to provide the "luxury package." The only real difference is, and מתקין מזגנים בחולון air conditioning is utilitarian – it serves a simple, mechanical purpose – so, you are not getting plush leather and heated seats on your extra money.

For the guidance, federal regulations require a minimum SEER price of 13 SEER on all newly installed air conditioning, which remains to be significantly better than the device you have already (which is probable an oldtime 7 or 10 SEER model). If you reside in California, you may imagine, federal regulations aren't enough…we start to use more regulations (sigh)! So, in California, the minimum SEER requirement is 14 SEER.
