Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor has been sent before to another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor)
  • All text files submitted are in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice or RTF (not exceeding 2MB)
  • When available, the URLs to access references online are provided
  • Figures were not inserted in the word document. They will be submitted as supplementary files (fourth step of submission process) in TIFF of JPEG format with the stipulated size (approximately 10cm x 15 cm) and resolution (300dpi) requirements.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in ‘About the Journal’
  • The instructions in ‘Ensuring a Blind Review’ have been followed
  • In cases of studies involving animals or human beings, an Ethical Research Committee approval certificate will be scanned and submitted as a supplementary file (fourth step of submission process)

Author Guidelines

1 GENERAL GUIDELINES

Registration and login are required to submit items online and to check the status of current submissions. Important: registration must be as ‘author’ to submission link be assessed. After registration, click in ‘User home’, select your role as ‘author’ and start the submission process by selecting the ‘Click here’ link. Thereafter, follow the five-step submission process. ‘Authors tutorial’, on main menu, illustrates all steps.
Papers written in English, Portuguese and Spanish will be accepted, but those written in English have publication priority.
Articles must be concise and written clearly for their comprehension. A maximum of six authors will be accepted. Studies involving animals or human beings should be approved by an Ethical Research Committee and must be accompanied by a certificate of approval (which must be scanned and submitted as a supplementary file).

2 PRESENTATION OF THE MANUSCRIPT

The journal publishes full-length scientific articles not exceeding 18 doubled-spaced A4 pages (including references, tables and legend to figures) typed in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice or RTF (not exceeding 2MB), with margins of 2cm on each side of the document, justified paragraph, in size 12 Times New Roman or 11 Arial font. Articles must not contain the identification of authors.

2.1 Figures: Graphics, photographs, drawings, schemes, etc. must be submitted as supplementary files (fourth step of submission process) in TIFF of JPEG format with the stipulated size (approximately 10cm x 15 cm) and resolution (300dpi) requirements.  Figures should not be inserted in the word document. Figure files must be identified as cited in text (the name of the file of Figure 1 must be Figure1. tiff). Figures should be limited to the least amount possible and color figures are preferred. Digital pictures with artificially augmented size and/or resolution by way of image editing computer software manipulation will not be accepted. Figures must be numbered with Arabic numbers according to the order they appear in the text, and the corresponding legends must be typed at the end of the manuscript. The place where the figures must be inserted on the text must be indicated.

2.2 Tables and charts: must be consecutively numbered in Arabic numbers. The legends shall be placed on the top of the tables. The tables and the charts must be inserted in the word document and must not be added like figures.

2.3 Citation of the authors: must follow the numeric system of citation, in which the references are numbered in the order they appear in the text and quoted through their numbers between brackets ([ ]). References must be cited in a numeric ascending order within the paragraph. Punctuation characters such as ‘periods’ and ‘commas’ must be placed after the numeric citation of the authors. Citation with consecutive enumeration should be separated by hyphens or commas. All references should be cited in the text.

According to Souza et al.[1], the radicular resorption …
Enamel acid etching has been studied by various authors [1,3,5-8].

2.4 Spelling of scientific and commercial expressions, of measuring units and foreign words
Scientific expressions must be written out in full and not abbreviated. The expressions included in this category are: names of chemical elements and compounds, and microbiological, zoological, botanical binomial nomenclature, etc. Generic names of products are preferred to commercial names, followed by the name of the manufacturer, and the city and country where it was manufactured, in parenthesis and separated by commas. Units of measurement must comply strictly with the International System of Units. Words in other languages must be avoided in the text in Portuguese using its translation. In case it is impossible, the foreign terms must be written in Italic. All abbreviation or symbol must be written in full at the first time it appears on the text.

3 STRUCTURE OF THE ARTICLE

3.1 Original research

The papers should be arranged as follows:

3.1.1 Title in English: must contain only information essential to describe the content of the research. A maximum of 20 words is accepted.

3.1.2 Title in Portuguese: version of the title in Portuguese.

3.1.3 Abstract: must be a concise presentation of each part of the work, highlighting objectives, methodology, results and conclusions with 150 to 250 words. It must be written sequentially without subdivisions.

3.1.4 Key words: 3 to 5 words and expressions that identify the content of the article. Authors must use ‘periods’ to separate the key words, which must have the first letter of the word in capital letters. When choosing descriptors, authors should refer to the ‘Health Science Descriptors- DeCS’ created by BIREME (available at http://decs.bvs.br/)

3.1.5 Resumo: version of the abstract in Portuguese.

3.1.6 Palavras-chave: key words in Portuguese

3.1.7 Introduction: summary of the rationale and proposal of the study, written concisely, including only proper references. It should clearly state the hypothesis of the study.

3.1.8 Material and Method: they must be presented with enough detail to allow confirmation of the findings. Indicate the statistical methods employed, if applicable.

3.1.9 Results: must be presented accompanied by tables and/or adequate illustrative material when nececssary. The data presented in tables and/or illustrations should not be repeated in the text, and data on tables and graphs should not be presented simultaneously.

3.1.10 Discussion: data should be analyzed in light of existing knowledge and results obtained in other relevant studies. Final considerations can also be done.

3.1.11 Conclusion: must be pertinent to the proposed objectives.

3.1.12 References: The authors are responsible for the accuracy of the references. There can be no more than 30 references, which must be numbered sequentially, in the order they appear in the text, according to the rules Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Journals- Vancouver style (available at: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html). All authors should be cited in references with up to six authors. In publications with seven or mores authors, the first six should be cited and followed by the Latin expression et al.
