Abstract

After a long period of indefiniteness, Russia ratified the Kyoto Protocol, allowing this to come into force on February 16, 2005. The Kyoto Protocol allows developing countries to present projects of mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and that these, once certificates, can be marketed to industrialized countries. The biogas produced in the organic material decomposition presents in its composition the methane. This is an important energy source and one of the main gases responsible to greenhouse effect. In this work the potential of the use of the biogas originated from sanitary landfill is discussed with the aim of esteeming the potentiality of the generation of electricity and the obtaining and commercialization of certificated emission reduction (CERs) in the" carbon market."
