Dengue is a public health problem in Brazil and is the most prevalent arboviruses in the world. Dengue occurrence has been poorly investigated in the municipality of Amarante do Maranhão (MA) but there are reports indicating high presence of the transmitting Aedes aegypti mosquito in the residents’ home. The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrences regarding the number of cases, age group of those who were infected, circulating serotypes of the virus and hospitalizations due to dengue, in the period from 2014 to 2020. The data were obtained from the DATASUS Tabnet platform. The data revealed that there were 236 infections registered in the municipality, mainly concentrated in the rainy season of the year; the most affected age group was 20 - 39 years; there are annual fluctuations in the number of cases, but the occurrence was higher in 2017. Since 2019, hospitalization cases exceeded non-hospitalization ones, indicating a worsening trend of dengue cases in the population. The causative serotypes were mostly unknown. The main action to control the disease should be the improvement of the municipal sewage system in order to prevent the mosquito that transmits dengue and other arboviruses, such as chikungunya and zika to reproduce.Downloads
