Foco e Escopo

Evaluation Policy
Guide for Assessors
The main objective of the evaluation is to validate the consistency, quality and social contribution of the submitted text; it is up to the evaluator to contribute to improving the text and making an appropriate editorial decision on the document. The expected contribution of the evaluation refers to the analysis of scientific consistency, in relation to the theoretical basis, applied methodology, obtained and described results, analysis and conclusions on the object and phenomena studied/researched.
For ethical reasons, reviewers must decline the request for review if they have a conflict of interest with respect to the submitted text.
The Biosciences magazine seeks ad hoc opinions from evaluators that answer the following questions:
the document meets the focus and scope of the journal;
the title is appropriate;
the summary presents in a synthetic way the content of the document and the Spanish and English versions are consistent;
the keywords were presented in a way that reflects the content of the document and the English versions are correct;
the introduction presents the topic of research in a consistent manner;
the objectives are presented clearly;
the theoretical basis is consistent;
the theoretical framework is current and representative;
the methodological procedures are appropriate and feasible;
the analysis is consistent with the information presented;
the data supporting the text are available;
the discussion is interrelated to the proposed objectives and the literature presented;
in the event that the text is rejected, it may be considered for future submission;
the writing follows the expected standard of a scientific text qualified for publication;
the ethical issues were observed (plagiarism and use of artificial intelligence).
The ad hoc evaluators are not identified to the authors, as well as to the other evaluators, adopting the double blind peer review process, except in the case of preprints. The journal Ciência da Informação establishes that they remain anonymous during the entire process of evaluation and publication.
The journal Biociences encourages authors to include their recommendations directly in the text available for evaluation, as well as filling out the evaluation form available in the OJS system. The Editorial Team takes care of maintaining anonymity between the parties, to ensure impartiality and exemption during the process. It should be noted that the Editorial Team assists in the rare cases where there is a need to remove inappropriate or offensive language.
If necessary, the ad hoc evaluators can contact the Editorial Team to resolve any questions.
Preliminary Analysis
Every document submitted to the journal is checked for compliance with focus and scope, as well as with general editorial standards, in order to follow the editorial flow.
The analysis consists of verifying whether the document was previously published (except preprints), if it adopts the appropriate templates made available, similarity issues, authorship, quality of reported metadata and suitability to the technical criteria defined in the editorial policies and standards.
After the preliminary analysis, the Editorial Team deliberates with the following possibilities: not accept, request corrections, request new submission or send for peer review.
Appointment of assessors
The choice of ad hoc evaluators is based on different factors such as: knowledge about the topic; area of activity; profile described in the Lattes Platforms and ORCID; in the journal’s own register of evaluators; and by recommendation of the Editorial Board. The invitation to evaluate a text is confidential. The documents are submitted for evaluation without authorship identification (registered only in the journal’s OJS, so as to ensure the double blind peer review process, except for the evaluation of preprints.
Peer review
The evaluation of the document is carried out by peers in double blind peer review, except preprints. During the evaluation, ad hoc evaluators can access the document safely through the journal’s OJS system.
Original documents are sent to ad hoc assessors with the minimum degree of doctor or recognized notorious knowledge or, in some cases, to members of the Editorial Board, especially to resolve conflicting assessment situations.
Assessors must register their opinions in the forms available in the specific round of evaluation, via OJS system. However, the reviewer can make suggestions and send an edited version to share with authors. The Editorial Team must take the necessary care to preserve anonymity among the parties involved.
The deadlines set by the journal are as follows:
Response to evaluation request: 10 days.
Submission evaluation: 30 days
It will be up to the Editorial Team to decide whether to give a longer deadline for response, or replace the evaluator, according to the journal’s demand.
Deliberation after Peer Review
After considering the opinion of the ad hoc assessors, the following deliberations are taken:
Accept the text, with style revisions and standardization of editorial standards carried out in the next phase of the process (standardization, grammar revision and translation);
Request minor content adjustments, without the need to return to the ad hoc evaluator, with a deadline of up to 15 days for feedback;
Request significant content review, with the addition of additional text, with the need to return to the ad hoc evaluator, with a deadline of up to 30 days for return;
Not to be accepted when the evaluation reveals significant concerns about theoretical, methodological or ethical reasoning.
The adjustments requested in item (ii) or item (iii) must be returned accompanied by a document that highlights the changes made and justify the points not addressed to what was requested by the evaluation. In the case of item (iii), the text undergoes a new round of evaluation before further editorial deliberation. In the case of item (iv), the ad hoc assessor must justify the decision, indicating the inaccuracies for the document not to be accepted for publication.
